Burundi Vice President impressed by Rwanda’s Itorero

NORTHERN PROVINCE MUSANZE — The government should focus on shaping the conduct of youth through cultural institutions like Itorero in order to stem the roots of genocide and ethnic divisions, the visiting Burundi First Vice President has said. Dr. Yves Sahinguvu made the remarks yesterday while touring the Northern Province as part of his three-day official visit to Rwanda. Together with his delegation, the Vice President visited the sector executive secretaries who are attending civic education-Itorero at the Peace and Leadership Centre in Nkumba, Burera district. The Vice President explained that through itorero youth are exposed to good cultural values, patriotism and development ideas which will promote the two countries. Sahinguvu said Burundi would borrow a leaf and set up a similar cultural institution to guide their youth towards development. The visiting delegation was accompanied by the state minister in charge of Local Government, Christine Nyatanyi, the executive secretary of Northern Province Déo Kabagambe, and area district leaders. The delegation also attended a meeting of Musanze district advisory council. Alex Ruberwa, council president briefed the visitors on the framework and the role of the advisory council in planning for the district development. The delegation later visited terraces in Rulindo district. Commenting on the visit to the area the vice president said that he would have a story to tell when he returns to Burundi. Ends
