EASTERN PROVINCE Nyagatare—Over 35 Rwandans have been expelled from Tanzania after authorities there looted possessions and allegedly physically tortured the now-returnees. According to Kabera, one of the returnees, Tanzania authorities are illegally confiscating cattle and other properties, leaving many families scattered in different parts of the vast country hiding for dear life. “We are here at the sector for over two weeks without receiving any food handouts from the sector because its leaders are saying that the sector has no capacity to handle such immediate needs,” Kabera said.Matimba Executive Secretary Emmanuel Tumusime said that, “almost every day” the sector receives returnees from Tanzania, and they try to house them in one of the school buildings near the sector as funds for further transfers are processed.“The majority of the received returnees have crossed into the country using Kagitumba Uganda- Rwanda border after walking long distances. The sector is trying hard to see that they are immediately transferred to Kiyanza main camp because the sector has no budget to feed them for a longer time,” Tumusime said. Ends
