ON June 28, ‘MTV Base Meets…with MTN’ competition returned to our television screens for its second season.The show, which was first initiated in 2011, is a motivational youth empowerment and mentorship initiative that connects African youth with its leaders and role models that shape their world.On its first season, the show saw African youths empowered and make positive life changes after meeting their role models.Ivy Mumo, Consumer Marketing Manager at MTN Rwanda said: “The initiative creates a unique chance for African youth to ask important questions directly to famous leaders, influential personalities in a candid and intimate forum that are chosen before the draws start.”He added that ‘MTV base meets…with MTN’ is an opportunity for the panelists to sit down and talk candidly with some of the most powerful people.Season 2 of ‘MTV Base Meets…with MTN’ is sponsored by MTN – Africa’s leading mobile operator and will see a varied line of exciting interviewees, such as Russell Simmons the Hip-hop producer, artiste and entrepreneur, Senegalese-American R&B and Hip-Hop Artist- Akon, South Sudanese supermodel Alek Wek. The show includes a nine part television series and advertising campaign that will air in 50 countries across Africa between August and October.The panelists will be interviewing eight “thought leaders” or “opinion formers” in the course of Season Two. These include international supermodel Alek Wek, former Nigerian President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, Togolese soccer star Emmanuel Adebayor, award-winning recording artiste Akon and music industry mogul and Hip-hop pioneer Russell Simmons.‘MTV Base Meets…with MTN’ is taped all over the world and airs to 50 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Nationalities that have been featured in the series so far include: Rwanda, Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Liberia, Uganda, Cote d’Ivoire as well as Uganda and Burundi.How it worksThe lucky winner will be selected to meet Akon in New York with fully paid tickets and accommodation for two, and would be part of the eight panelists, of which the others will be chosen back stage by MTV base.“Rwandans stand a big chance to win the competition, so they should do their best to enter into the draws,” said David Kezio, a public relations officer with MTN Rwanda.
