Rwandan Diaspora in song and dance to mark Liberation Day

Rwandan citizens in Michiana, a region in northern Indiana, U.S.A, on July 4, came together to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Rwanda’s Independence and the 18th Liberation anniversary, as well as the America’s Independence. The event, organised by Rutsobe Nsengiyumva, newly-elected Youth and Culture Representative of the Rwandan Diaspora of Michiana, was graced by Gaetan Gatete, president of the Rwandan Diaspora of Michiana.Speaking at the event, Gatete addressed the Rwandan community by explaining the significance of Rwanda’s Independence; its liberation and the awesome responsibility that our liberty entails. He also reminded the Diaspora that despite being away from the country, their endeavors in America have far-reaching effects on Rwanda’s future development, asking those present not take their opportunities for granted.After his speech, the crowd enjoyed a barbeque feast with Rwandan music playing in the background. At the culmination of dinner, people enjoyed Rwandan traditional music, also known as “Amariza” performed by Rwandan youth. The celebration concluded with exciting games, as the excited crowd of men and women, young and old, played volleyball, as well as basketball. The Rwandan Diaspora of Michiana was founded in June 2012. According to Nsengiyumva, the organisation was formed in order to maintain closer ties among Rwandans living in Michiana and support foreign students and other newcomers from Rwanda.“The organisation allows us to harness our skills, education and resources in order to help our government to achieve its ambitious goals,” said Nsengiyumva. The event was instrumental in bringing together old friends; creating new bonds and helped to reignite their passion to assist Rwanda in continuing its path towards prosperity.
