African Tax Administration Forum meets in Burundi

Revenue and tax officials from 14 African Tax Administration Forum (ATAF) countries on Monday began a five-day workshop in Bujumbura to look at ways of improving the taxation of natural resources, Burundian Revenue Authority (OBR) Commissioner General told participants at the workshop.For five days, participants to the workshop will analyze the legal basis for taxation of natural resources and will share information and experience on best practices in an attempt to address challenges on taxation of natural resources, said Holmes Kieran, Commissioner General of the Burundi Revenue Authority (OBR) .According to the OBR official, the workshop is very important for Burundi insofar as the east African country has a lot of natural resources. Kieran said, Better taxation laws, rules and procedures on natural resources is very important because today and future generation can be affected by the taxation as they are the ones who will take advantage of the richness of the country.The OBR Commissioner General said that the workshop will make suggestions of laws on natural resources that will be submitted to respective governments for consideration. The African Tax Administration Forum (ATAF) was created in 2009 and Burundi joined the Forum in 2011.
