Editor,I will say it again and again and again: the Gacaca judicial system needs codification. As we applaud this great achievement, one emerging lesson is thatAfrica can handle its own issues, from justice to food security, infrastructure, name it.In the case of Gacaca, as the courts close after ten years of outstanding work, do we have a structured way of continuing its spirit, especially while handling in minor offences at community level? There’s need to entrench reconciliatory rather than retributive justice. There is no doubt that Gacaca has done wonders. Its achievements should inspire the region and Africa in general to promote community justice as opposed to the imported, conventional judicial system.Matsiko DB KahungaKampala
