Indian firm to build $40m hospital

A team of Indian medical specialists, yesterday, disclosed plans to set up a modern $40 million multi-specialty hospital in the country within the next one year.“We want to build a state-of-the art hospital in Rwanda so that this country can act as the health hub in the region. Rwanda has the capacity to be great in this continent and it’s definitely headed in the right direction in terms of investment, education and health,” Dr. Prithvi Mohandas, the Managing Director of MIOT Hospitals International said. Dr. Mohandas added that upon completion, the health facility would specialise in the treatment of heart defects among children and adults. The hospital would also train local medics in various specialties including orthopaedics, paediatrics, and oncology, among others. He said the training of local medics is due to start in four weeks although the actual number of beneficiaries is yet to be ascertained.A team of four, headed by Mohandas , has been in the country for the past four days offering free medical services that have so far benefited over 200 patients at the Central Teaching Hospital of Kigali (CHUK). Dr. Mohandas decried the huge backlog of medical cases in the country despite the presence of state-of-the-art medical facilities. He said his team and the Ministry of Health would assess key areas that require training. The Director of Clinical Services in the Ministry of Health, Jean de Dieu Ngirabega, confirmed the partnership with the MIOT Hospitals International.
