Seven hundred sixty six athletes have registered for the forthcoming Kigali International Peace Marathon set for May 11. According to the Kigali International Peace Marathon organizing secretariat based at Amahoro stadium, national and foreign athletes have registered for this year’s lucrative marathon. Among the registered athletes; only 102 have registered for full marathon, 286 in run for fun and 378 in half marathon respectively. Late last month, registered athletes tallied to four in full marathon, twenty in half marathon and 164 in Run for Fun event. However, many more athletes are expected to register before the deadline registration date set for this Friday (local participants) and Saturday (foreigners). Meanwhile, winners of the 4th edition of the Kigali International Marathon are expected to bag cash prizes worth $23.200 (approx. Frw13 millions). The first five winners in the marathon event are expected to bag $ 2000, $1500, $1200, $800 and $600 respectively.Winners in half marathon event will scoop $1600, $1400, $1200, $800 and $500 respectively. The Kigali International Marathon is sponsored by Ministry of Culture and Sport which has injected in Frw30 millions, Rwanda National Olympic Committee which has also injected in Frw2.5 millions as well as Rwanda’s tourism body ORTPN which has contributed Frw5 millions. Other sponsors include; Soroptimist international, MTN Rwanda, Bank Populaire, Rwanda, Mountain Tea, UNFPA, Magerwa, Bralirwa, ONP, Ocir café, Inyange, SMS Media and Lotto Rwanda among others. Kenya’s Daniel Rotich won the full marathon in last year’s edition while Félix Ntirenganya was the best Rwandan in the males’ Marathon category, finishing 14th overall. Kenya’s Prisca Kiprono won the female full marathon category. Tanzania’s Dickson Marwa and Josephine Deemay won the men and women’s half-marathon while Gervais Renzaho won the run for fun event. Ends
