Kajuga turns to Benin Championship for Olympics bid

RWANDA’s Robert Kajuga will start immediate training in preparation for the Senior African Athletics Championship in Porto-Nova, Benin scheduled for June 26 to July 1, as the runner bids to get the minimum qualification for the London 2012 Olympic Games.Kajuga finished in 3rd place in the Kigali International Peace half marathon after using 1 hour, 3 minutes and 11 seconds and the SEC Academy runner has now turned focus to the African championship in order to get a shot at his first Olympics.“I will start my training tomorrow (today) because I really need to get the minimum required time to compete in the Olympics,” the 27-year old said.Kajuga was the only Rwandan to get a podium finish in the race that attracted over 900 athletes, who took part in different categories which included full marathon, half marathon, relay and run for fun.Full marathon runner Jean Pierre Mvuyekure, one of only two Rwandans to have already qualified for the London Games, pulled out of the Kigali Peace marathon due to injury in a competition that was dominated by Kenyans.Rwanda is expected to send a 42 man delegation to the Games with representatives in the fields of cycling, athletics, swimming and taekwondo, while Paralympics will be represented in sitting volleyball, power lifting and athletics.
