Police gears up for 12th anniversary

As part of the celebrations to mark the Rwanda National Police (RNP)’s 12th anniversary, the force will support over 1, 000 vulnerable people across the country, police Spokesperson, Supt Theos Badege, said yesterday.The support will include health insurance for 500 poor people and 500 mosquito nets for vulnerable families in five districts.They will also donate cows to five families under the one-cow per poor family programme.The activities to mark this year’s police anniversary, also called the ‘Police Week’ will be launched on June 1 in Nyamasheke District, and will end on June 16. The campaign will be held under the theme “Fighting against drugs to end Gender Based Violence (GBV) and HIV/AIDS”“There is still a problem of GBV and domestic violence. Crime statistics on domestic violence, sometimes resulting into death, seem to be still high, Most of the time caused by drug abuse. “This campaign, therefore, seeks to engage the public to fight and prevent drug abuse, as a way of eradicating GBV and domestic violence, and preventing HIV/AIDS infections,” Badege stated.The campaign will be held in one district in each province, the others being Gatsibo, Nyanza, Kicukiro and Burera districts.“We are partnering with districts to prevent crimes and also help them in development activities aimed at fighting poverty.The two-week campaign will also feature games between police and the youth.The activities are scheduled to end with an open day on June 16 at the police headquarters in Kacyiru where outstanding police officers and units, and five people who excelled in community policing, will be awarded.
