Rwanda has for long advocated for the transfer of the Archives of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) to the country, where the Genocide against the Tutsi was committed in 1994.Despite this, the United Nations has approved funding for the construction of ICTR Archives in Arusha Tanzania, where the court is based.This development comes as the court prepares to wind up business, with the international residue mechanism due to commence on June 1.By undertaking to put up a home for the evidence of the genocide in Arusha, it appears this will most likely be the permanent home of the archives.However, it is important that those involved in the decision making process acknowledge the importance of having the ICTR archives which are a repository of evidence of the planning and execution of the genocide transferred to Rwanda.The archives are part of the historical legacy of the country and should therefore rest where they belong.
