BUGESERA – The staff of Ecobank-Rwanda Saturday afternoon visited Ntarama Memorial Site, Bugesera district, to pay their respects to the victims of the 1994 genocide. The mourners toured the site before laying wreaths on the graves. Grief engulfed the staff, and scores among them could not hold back tears after listening to stories of how the victims were massacred. . It is a terrible and difficult time for us to feel the pain and grief the people of Rwanda suffered, said Daniel Sackey, the Ecobank Managing Director who led the delegation. We should learn from this history not to let this happen again in Rwanda or anywhere else in the world, he added. , I do not have a strong message to the unconvinced world about the 1994 Genocide, but let them come and visit, listen, and see what happened in Nyamata. The staff donated Frw1 million towards the care of the site. Sackey observed that a lot needed to be done to heal the wounds of the victims. It is our first visit to the site being our first year in Rwanda after taking over ownership of the Bank of Commerce, Development and Industry (BCDI) mid-last year. But we hope to come even more in order to restore hope to genocide survivors, he said. Isabelle Mucyowera, the district vice Mayor in charge of social affairs, thanked the staff and said it did honour to the district. Ecobank’s tribute coincided with the burial of other remains of Genocide victims which were discovered in various parts of the district. Ends
