World Vision boosts Kigali Peace Marathon

WITH just one day before the country’s biggest marathon race starts, sponsors are continuing to inject money into the competition which has attracted over 500 participants.After committing Rwf5m to the Peace marathon, World Vision Rwanda country director, George Githae, said the Christian Humanitarian organisation wishes to strengthen its partnership with the Rwandan government, especially in building sustainable peace and harmony through many things that include sports.”The marathon is divided into five categories; full marathon (42km), half marathon (21km), 10.54km marathon team relays, 5km course for children and 5km run for fun race.Registration is due to end this evening and entry fees for marathon and relay marathon runners remains unchanged from last year at $45 (Rwf27,000) and $25 (Rwf15,000) for the half marathon. Athletes, who wish to compete in the 5km race for fun, will part with $6 (Rwf3,600).The winner of the full marathon will pocket, $2500 (Rwf1.5m) while the tenth will earn $200 (Rwf120,000). The half marathon winner will also pocket $2500 (Rwf1.5m).Last year’s marathon winner Felix Karambe has already confirmed participation. The Kigali Peace Cup is organised by the Ministry of Sports, Rwanda Athletics Federation and Voyage Soroptimist.
