How they celebrated Mother’s Day

On the second Sunday of May Mothers are celebrated. On Mother’s Day people spend time with their loving and caring mothers as they express love and gratitude to the women who nurtured them. On this day, people like to surprise their moms with different and unique mother’s day gifts such as cakes, sweets, chocolates, flowers and greeting cards.Every country celebrates Mother’s Day in its unique way because they have their own traditions, cultures and values. But how did the people here in Rwanda, spend their Mother’s Day? “I went for lunch with my mum after church and we had fun talking. I thanked her for the countless things she has done as we remembered the times I gave her headaches and disturbed her,” says Monica Nyakato, a Senior Six holiday maker. The warmth and love that a mother provides moves beyond boundaries and that is why Arnold Nsengiyumva, had to cross the border from Uganda, to come and spend the day with his mum. “I love my mum and I am grateful for the love she shows me. So I decided to surprise her and carry flowers from Uganda even though I have exams real soon,” Nsengiyumva said.Much as some people live near their parents, others do not. Ashaba Kamahoro lives in Malaysia and says, “If I was with my mum, I would hug her very tight and buy her roses because she’s my best friend. I sent her a lovely message and updated my Facebook profile picture, as tribute to her.”We celebrate Mother’s Day in recognition of the millions of good things that mothers do to nourish us, enrich our lives and protect us, regardless of our age. “On Mother’s Day the best gifts are not necessarily the most expensive ones but the ones direct from your heart. A message that carries a special meaning from deep inside a child’s heart is the best gift for a mother,” said Nossie Bucyana, a loving mum.
