The common English saying states, ‘behind every successful man there is a woman’ does it also mean that behind every successful woman there is a man?Today, women are empowered and given the same opportunities their brothers get, unlike earlier when a woman’s place was home in the kitchen. We are grateful that our Governments and our brothers believe in us and are dismantling the mentality that women are the weaker sex. There are a few young women who misuse the opportunities they’ve been granted to disrespect their partners or spouses. I was in bar and overheard a young married woman explaining among her peers the reason why she was in the bar without her husband. “He can’t stop me from doing what I want, it’s my money and I earn more than him so he can’t control me,” she said. With such a disgraceful statement echoing in my ears, I wondered what her husband would do if he heard her speak like that. It’s from this young woman’s statement that I realised why young men shy away from young employed women. I have talked to several young men who are scared of marriage and their fears revolve around the financial aspect. Couples have to share whatever they earn collectively. Let what one earns not be the basis of who has a say in a home. Both wife and husband have to work hard for the betterment of the family. In reference to a popular verse in the Bible about a husband and wife being submissive, Ephesians 5:21-25 states that, “Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord, for a husband has the authority over his wife just as Christ has authority over the church, being the Saviour. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. Husbands love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.” Empowering women is meant to improve the welfare of families, not tear them asunder.
