Accountability and good governance go hand in hand

Transparency Internation-Rwanda and Research for Development Institute will soon carry out a survey to determine the impact of the funds that government gives to Nine-Year Basic Education schools and other primary schools each year.The survey is aimed at ascertaining how transparent the process is and if the funds are used appropriately.This is a very important move as it will not only ensure accountability but also sustain people’s faith in public institutions as good governance is inseparable from accountability.Access to results accruing from such surveys and recommendations as well as resultant actions should also be made public.Information on government projects and programmes should be made as widely available to the population as possible. This should be through publishing the outcomes from consultation processes, making it known what decisions were taken and why, setting up mechanisms for residents to provide feedback, among many options.This will guarantee participation of ordinary citizens and encourage them to become involved, take responsibility to monitor and evaluate outcomes and also have a genuine sense of ownership for all programmes aimed at uplifting them.It’s good that the survey is targeting education as a compromised education system would mean a poor start for child education with long-term consequences to the nation. All players, including students, parents, teachers, should give genuine feedback.
