The Action Committee for Renewal (CAR), Togo’s second opposition party, is threatening protests over the new electoral boundaries created through a governmental decision on April 30.In its statement released on Wednesday, CAR said it is disappointed at the reduction of the number of parliamentary seats in areas seen as opposition strongholds such as Yoto and Amou, which were all allocated one seat each. The party denounced the government’s decision as “an injustice” against the people of Yoto and Amou, threatening protest marches on May 18-25 in Tabligbo and Amlame, which are respectively the headquarters of these regions. In the statement, the party’s national secretary, Jean Kissi, said, “CAR does not understand why during the boundary delimitation, the government, instead of correcting the injustice that the two regions have experienced for a long time, decided to aggravate it by reducing the number of seats from three to two.”CAR demanded that the government reinstate the three constituencies that have always existed in Yoto and Amou.
