Four-time major champion has ‘plenty left to achieve’

ST. AUGUSTINE – Four-time major winner Phil Mickelson was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame on Monday, but insists he still has plenty more left to achieve in the game.Mickelson was one of five people to be bestowed with the honour at the World Golf Hall of Fame & Museum in St. Augustine, Florida - the other members of the class of 2012 being two-time major champion Sandy Lyle, player and veteran broadcaster Peter Alliss, ex-LPGA star Hollis Stacy and golf reporter Dan Jenkins.In order to secure entry, proposed players must receive at least 65 per cent of votes cast by journalists, historians and golf dignitaries and Mickelson polled 72 per cent of the vote.The 41-year-old - who has won the Masters three times and now boasts 40 career victories - admitted it was an honour to see his name alongside so many greats of the game despite his relatively young age.“It’s still fun. I think that it’s cool to look back on accomplishments and I’ll have an opportunity over the coming years to try to accomplish more. ““I would just like to say that since I was a kid and first picked up my golf club, I’ve been living my dream, and I want to thank you for this great honour tonight,” Mickelson said.Lyle - winner of the Open Championship at Sandwich in 1985 and The Masters in 1988 - spoke of his delight at finally securing entry and acknowledged it was a moment he feared might never arrive.“That ‘close’ went on for quite a few years and I sort of thought, ‘It ain’t going to happen.’ I thought I was going to be overlooked,” the Scot said. “But it’s happened, so I’m very happy.”
