SORAS Group Ltd has injected RwF5m in this year’s Ascension des Mille Collines cycling championships scheduled for May 19.According to the Rwanda Cycling Union officials, the annual competition will attract over 54 cyclists.The 130 km road race from Huye to Kigali has attracted nine local clubs with each being represented by six participants including last year’s champions Benediction cycling club from Rubavu District.“It is our policy to give back to the community and, on a more important note, cycling has become a big sport in Rwanda which makes it very important for the race to get sponsorship,” explained Didier Nzamurambaho, the head of the commercial department at SORAS Group Ltd.With a clear advantage, Benediction club which has national team members including Janvier Hadi, Gasore Hategeka and Nathan Byukusenge will be a hard nut to crack and a favourite to win the winner’s cash prize of RwF400,000.According to the RCU permanent secretary Emmanuel Murenzi, this competition’s winners will be categorised by clubs and not individuals like the other races.The second placed team will bag RwF300, 000 while the third and fourth will go home with RwF200, 000 and RwF100, 000 respectively.Debutants Abahizi from Kicukiro who are mainly composed of Americans working in Kigali also hope to make quite an impression in their maiden appearance.The other clubs that have confirmed participation include Fly (Gasabo), Club les Amis Sportifs (Rwamagana), Kiramuruzi (Gatsibo), Rapide (Kicukiro), Ciné Elmay (Nyarugenge) and Satelite from Kayonza.
