Irebe Ry' Itangaza, a solo exhibition by collage artist Crista Uwase is set to kick off on May 6, at L' Espace, Kacyiru. Curated by Jemima Kakizi through Impundu Arts Center, the exhibition will run until May 14, and visitors “will have the chance to experience Uwase's exploration of Rwandan patterns, Imigongo, and culture in a different way.” The self-taught Rwandan artist is best known for her collages composed of many layers of torn paper with various colours, textures, weight and types of paper from magazines. Irebe Ry’Itangaza is her first solo exhibition. Her artworks also consistently celebrate blackness, and challenge the notions that ‘black skin is a curse’. The mantra of ‘black is beautiful’ is what immediately comes to mind when one delves into Uwase’s art world. Her works seek to celebrate the black skin and blackness in general, and the black woman in particular. In February 2022, Uwase was part of “At the Entrance” art exhibition which featured eight local female visual artists. It was also curated by Jemima kakizi. The doors for Irebe Ry’Itangaza art exhibition will be opening from 6 p.m to 10 p.m.
