Teachers urged on students’ rights

WESTERN PROVINCE RUSIZI — Teachers in the country have been urged to avoid abusing student rights. The remarks were made at the closing of a workshop for about 27 secondary school teachers in Rusizi district on Monday. The workshop was aimed at enlightening participants about children rights, reproductive health and HIV/Aids prevention among students. The four-day workshop held at Groupe Scolaire Apeduc-Imena in Kamembe sector was organized by Nyamagabe-based association, Tuvuge Twiyubaka. The association focuses on creating awareness of childrens’ rights among students through debates. You know very well that some people deliberately violate students’ rights, so you as their teachers should seriously make it your priority to go and teach them in your respective schools and residences on various matters concerning their rights, David Murenzi one of the trainers said. By doing this, he said, it will help all students countrywide to know their rights and to prevent anybody from abusing them. The teachers were also urged to encourage students to defend the violation of their rights, behave maturely and to avoid getting stuck on their individual views. Discipline, hardwork and being foresighted, the trainers said, were important virtues for students. The participants observed that some teachers were still ignorant of the students’ rights and called upon Tuvuge Twiyubaka Association to extend such training to other districts countrywide. The association has conducted similar training in Nyaruguru and Nyamagabe districts in southern province. The association officials said they would organise a wider forum to debate students’ rights where student participants will be drawn from the Great Lakes countries in November. Ends
