Why the fuss over interracial marriage?

After completing her Master’s Degree in Sydney, Australia, Christine 28, couldn’t wait to introduce her significant other to her family back in Rwanda. Christine and Latif met in their second year at a University in Australia where they were both pursuing the same course. They got along quite perfectly, had similar interests, enjoyed spending time together and were really compatible so they ultimately fell in love. Latif and Christine decided they wanted to see each other grow old and spend the rest of their lives together.So Christine’s next move was to introduce the love of her life to her family who had for so long (since her first graduation) been asking her that question that gets girls edgy, “when are you introducing your boyfriend to us?”Latif was Iranian while Christine was Rwandan. She always told her family about this guy that has got her head over heels and so they couldn’t wait to meet their son-in-law to be.The two had already planned on walking down the aisle a few months after completing with their Master’s degree.So anyhow, Lafit finally met with Christine’s family and like any other family, they were extremely receptive. They had a grand luncheon with him and acted like they were so delighted to meet him.After he had left, Christine’s parents told her there is no way she could get married to someone from a totally different race, who they hardly knew a thing about his culture. They thwarted every attempt she made to get married to Latif and, at some point, Christine and her parents couldn’t cross paths. A clan meeting was called over that issue and they told her she would cease to be part of the clan if she went ahead to marry her Iranian sweetheart.She choose him over her family and its now seven years down the road and until today, Christine and her family don’t get along quite well simply because of her interracial marriage.Well, Christine is just one of so many similar cases where people have been rejected by their families simply because they defied the odds and married someone from a different race.It’s very unfortunate that in this day and age we still have people who have the audacity to act like interracial marriages are the worst things on planet earth.For instance, if a black girl gets married to a rich fellow black man, there isnt a problem but if the same thing happens between a black girl and a rich white guy, it’s front page story all over the tabloids like it’s something news worthy, bizarre or peculiar. Really? We ought to grow up and be better than this.For crying out loud, can’t two people from totally different races honestly fall in love, with no strings attached??Why do we always question such marriages and think it was all about the money or someone was eyeing citizenship of another country.Why should we condemn such marriages like it was a marriage with an alien? At times, we can’t control who we fall in love with so let’s not let the prejudice of society deny us the opportunity to be happy with who we choose to spend the rest of our lives with over trivial things. Race shouldn’t be an issue, what matters the most is if you are compatible and happy together.
