Editor, I wish to express my sincere gratitude to the Rwandan peacekeepers based in Darfur for the great service they have done for the people of Darfur. After reading in yesterday’s The New Times that the Rwandan Defence Force contingent serving under the UN-Africa Union Hybrid Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) had yet again constructed and handed over schools to local communities, I got the feeling that if all the peacekeepers perhaps did more than just maintaining peace and security, they would achieve their ultimate objectives faster. There is a humane action that should not only be emulated by peacekeepers all over the world, but also integrated in the core peacekeeping mandates. That can never be a better way to promote peace than directly and actively partaking in development activities, especially in communities that are emerging from conflict.Enock MutabaziKicukiro
