Kigali Golf Club yesterday staged a specially arranged tournament for caddies to kick-start this year’s Captain’s tournament. The tournament, which attracted over 40 caddies, is one of three events lined up for the annual Captain’s event, which is set to spread throughout this week. Other events on schedule include a children’s tournament on Thursday and a members’ competition on Saturday. Frw6 million has been injected into the tournament courtesy of Computer Point, one of KGC’s partners. “Captains won’t have to dig deep into their pockets thanks to Computer Point, who have bankrolled this year’s Captains’ tournament to a tune of Frw 6 million,” the club captain Marcel Byusa explained. Byusa added, “Normally, we use the caddie tournament to identify those outstanding caddies after which we try to incorporate them into the senior category”. In regards to their sponsorship, Computer Point managing director Binu M Tharian Thomas said, “We feel that this is the right place (Kigali Golf Club) to give some support because there is a lot of enjoyment, respect and people out here are very social”. As the caddies teed-off yesterday, they received lots of applauds from Emmanuel Ruterana and Jean-Baptiste Hakizimana, some of Rwanda’s top golfers. “In Rwanda and the world over, Caddie competitions have always been a stepping ground for famous golfers. “Most of us here went through the same ranks so it’s good to see youngsters following the same trend,” Rwanda’s sole professional golfer, Ruterana added.
