Although we have come to the end of the official 18th commemoration period 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, we should not forget that there are many Rwandans still mourning the death of their loved ones. During the commemoration period, the support extended to survivors was exceptional and this should continue. The horrors of 1994 lasted 100 days and we should expect various commemoration events over a 3-months period. However, beyond the commemoration period and as we return to the daily tasks, the ultimate goal is to tirelessly work towards improving the lives of the Rwandan people and generally national development. We must do all we can, individually and collectively as a people, to make sure the goal of national development is achieved. Through our own efforts we have pulled millions out of the poverty trap but there is still a lot more to be accomplished. Only 18 years ago, the country was deemed a ‘failed state’ but because of the hard work and sacrifices of its people and leadership, the label did not stick. As a tribute to the ones who lost their lives, let’s build a country they would be proud of.
