Un chief calls for respect of Guinea-bissau election results

Tension Military intelligence chief killed UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday lauded the “peaceful and orderly” presidential election in Guinea-Bissau, and called upon candidates and their supporters to “respect the official results when announced by the Supreme Court.”“The secretary-general commends the people of Guinea-Bissau for the peaceful and orderly conduct of the presidential election held on 18 March,” said a statement issued late on Monday by Ban’s spokesman.“As the electoral process continues, he reiterates his appeal to the candidates and their supporters to abide by the laws, and calls on them to refrain from any action that could hamper the electoral process and to respect the official results when announced by the Supreme Court,” said the statement.Nine candidates are running for office in the West African nation, but analysts say only four have a realistic chance in the election, which was triggered by the death in January of President Malam Bacai Sanha.Guinea-Bissau has been plagued by army mutinies and coups over the past decade. No elected president has managed to serve a full term since multi-party politics was introduced in 1994.“The secretary-general condemns the killing of the former head of military intelligence, Colonel Samba Djalo, which took place last night in Bissau,” the statement said. “He urges national authorities to take necessary measures to bring those responsible to justice.”“The secretary-general reaffirms the readiness of the United Nations, in cooperation with the wider international community, to support the consolidation of peace and development in Guinea-Bissau,” it said.
