My narrow escape from alcohol addiction

Shocked?Two years back, at a college dinner, I met Pollo. His stature, looks and conduct were irresistible. “Isn’t he hot,” I asked my friend Gladys. “Yeah, but….,”she responded. I so wasn’t ready for Gladys’ buts or negativity….I soon found out just like everybody else already knew that Pollo was a drunkard. However, I couldn’t ignore how I felt about him. We were the hottest gossip at campus. We did all those things young people in love do – literally inseparable, holding hands, sharing lunch and displaying affection just as much as we could. To some girls I was daring, others just plain stupid. Gladys’ patience came to a halt when routine beer parties replaced my church life. “I don’t drink, I just keep him company at the bar,” I explained myself. Drinking wasn’t my intention, in fact I wanted to help Pollo quit. But instead, I started with a glass of wine like my brilliant boyfriend suggested. Wine was my thing for a while till Pollo suggested cocktails. To us, alcohol was fun and prayer was for weak chaps. “If it was possible, I would drink for a living,” Pollo said. The more time I spent with him my love for booze grew. I graduated to beer. We were always thirsty and life was too short to live without ‘fun.’ Alcohol was all the fun we needed. “How do you spend a whole day sober?” I asked Gladys. I lost appetite for food. I attended class with a Bond 7 bottle in my bag. My partying sessions started from Tuesday till Monday. Club security personnel knew me by face!Family and friends blamed me for choosing the wrong boyfriend but I wasn’t about to dump him. Our quest for booze and the after drama intensified. I got the shock of my life. After a drinking spree, Pollo asked if we had met before!He forgot his own girlfriend! I realized the need to be sober. I called off the relationship and quit drinking. Wondered what I’d do if I got drunk and asked my mother if we had met before!
