Editor, I wish to respond to a story titled “Man arrested in SIM-swap, cheque counterfeit scam”, published in The New Times of February, 29.First, the banking sector needs to reform their payments standards and banish those work/cost-intensive, time consuming and risk-rich pre-historical means of payment called cheques. Second, there’s need to adjust in how to treat different service (it is unacceptable to see a person having Rwf100 million cash and another with Rwf150 000 being serviced by the same people at the same standards? The two are important but the needs are different and specialized service is needed here. Transactions involving huge sums of money need to be approved by several people, and there should be a password that is meant only to be known by the account holder, not even by any bank teller.This will not be copied unless the owner gives it away.
