Sheeba returns to the stage in Rwanda

WHEN Sheeba Karungi, a renowned dancer, singer and fashion designer in Uganda started performing in nightclubs at the age of 15, little did she know that it would usher her into the glitzy and glamorous world of music and fashion. With a background of working for different music groups in Uganda, Sheeba has been there and seen it all, while growing up in other people’s shadows; but she is now beginning to make an indelible mark on the face of East Africa.She has performed at numerous prestigious nightclubs in Uganda; and to date, her talent is taking her places. Sheeba has already worked with several artistes in Uganda, Tanzania and she is now targeting the rest of other countries in the region.Born in Uganda to a Rwandan father and Ugandan mother, Sheeba is carving a name for herself in an industry that most people in the region prefer to be only consumers. The ‘Automatic’ star has planted her roots in Rwanda and pledges a big input to the country’s growing entertainment scene.She is a rare breed of Africa, who has ventured into live performances with some remarkable success. Sheeba says her music exploits continue to surprise East Africans as they wonder how she cut it. The 22-year-old singer presents a mixed repertoire of modern melodies, telling her own story as an inspiration to others; because she believes it is possible to make the seemingly impossible happen.The songbird has decided to set base in the country and will be conducting most of her entertainment activities at the Manor Hotel in Nyarutarama.The former Obsession member did not come alone, but also with her crew of three; two dancers and a DJ called Rovers. After splitting with the Obsession, Sheeba decided to go solo and she already has over eight tracks under her belt. Sheeba is here to exploit the potential of music industry in the country: “Rwandan music is gaining popularity in the region and I would want to produce songs with the local artistes,” she remarks.“I love Rwandan music but the musicians lack the most important device of entertaining, which is dancing. I want to introduce this special ingredient to spice up the music scene by teaching artistes how to dance,” she adds. The owner of the Manor Hotel, Said Immy, wants to introduce a culture evening which will be held once a month and Sheeba is expected to conduct the event. The star, who is known for her routine erotic dances, wants to promote local musicians by giving them a chance to perform over the weekends.Fashion Sheeba owns a fashion label in Uganda that specialises in African designs. She has been designing garments for sometime now, yet the outfits she exhibits are in three categories - casual, office and cocktail wear for women.“Style is something that comes from within- you either have it or you do not,” Sheeba says.“I always aim for sexy and powerful outfits. I also consider comfort in my outfits. The world is full of style icons, but Gaga, the late Alexander McQueen, Beyonce, Kimora Lee and Victoria Beckham,” she mentions.
