Editor,How can many Rwandans access banking services? Banks can reach many Rwandans, especially in rural areas, by what is known as agency banking. What is agency banking? It’s the partnership between banks and business people such as supermarkets, hardware shops, fuel refilling stations and other business establishments where the later provide services to the bank’s customers. Such services may include receiving deposits, payments such as cash, salaries, pension money, sending and receiving of transfers. Other services may also include payment of bills, ordering cheque books, receiving account opening and loan application forms and many more. However, for agency banking to succeed there’s need for use of robust IT infrastructure, like mobile and internet. I hope that is where Rwanda is heading to.Ephram BihaliroKigali
