Twenty national athletics clubs have confirmed their participation in this month’s clubs’ tournament scheduled to take place at Kicukiro grounds over the weekend. The local athletics body, RAF has confirmed that the twenty clubs who have confirmed their participation are the most competitive and active clubs in the country. Confirmed club include: APR, New Athletics Stars(NAS), Police, PUMA, Gatenga, Gasabo, Rwanda National University (UNR), Kirehe, Nyamasheke, Ruhango, Huye, Muhanga, Kamonyi, Rulindo, Burera, Gicumbi, Rutsiro, AAD/Nyabihu, Urumuli and Rusizi athletics clubs respectively. RAF’s Alphonse Manirarora said that five clubs have already confirmed their withdrawal from the one-day tournament. They include: Imena, Rushashi, Ngenda, St. Andre and Lycée de Kigali athletics clubs. However, the federation has decided to award certificates of performances instead of prizes due to financial constraints. The federation’s Secretary General Appolinare Munyangoga said, “This time we shall award certificates of performances to winners but no prizes as it used to be,” The one-day tournament will help in selecting a junior squad which will take part in the World junior championship.
