The jumpsuit was originally a one-piece garment used by skydivers but has currently moved up the fashion ladder. The skydiver’s jumpsuits were simple garments designed to insulate the body from the cold of high altitudes and minimize risk of covering important handles and grips. The jumpsuit is especially convenient for parents in countries with colder climate who want ultimate warmth for their children because they are padded with material that maintains warmth.According to Wikipedia, originating in the 1960s, the jumpsuit made occasional appearances in common and high fashion (particularly in the 1980s). There is a current fashion trend for trousers with co-joined tops; the result is the retro all-in-one jumpsuit, flying suit or playsuit as it is called. In an article by fashion-era.com, the new trend started when top designers like the late Alexander McQueen showcased jumpsuits on the runway. McQueen presented both these glamour girl body-con jumpsuits at his spring summer 2009 runway show. The article further stated that jumpsuits were an enormously popular fashion trend of the late 60s/early 1970s, and then again in the 1980s as flying suits. The classic colours for jumpsuits were initially black or white, with white jumpsuits often being halter neck.In an interview with The New Times, Alison F. Nyakoonjo, said that jumpsuits are extremely trendy. She is greatly fascinated with the return of Old Skool fashion. “I love them. I own five jumpsuits. It’s nice to have the old days come back to us. I remember wearing jumpsuits as a kid and now, seeing them come back as a new trend and even better, they are more stylish,” Alison said. According to Baz Waiswa, a journalist with the Redpepper Publication in Uganda, jumpsuits look good on a well-built woman. “They make a woman look sexy but descent. Some corporate women even wear them to office especially the long ones. The jumpsuit is garb that a woman can wear even during family gatherings,” Waiswa discloses. Monica Tracy, a student at Kigali Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) said that jumpsuits are much better than mini skirts. “They are conservative especially for women who don’t like flaunting their bodies. Jumpsuits also flatter all body shapes,” Tracy explains. Jumpsuits are a fashion hit that women of all shapes can fit in without looking odd.
