600 girls trained in health and personal finance skills

600 girls between the ages of 10 and 12, yesterday, completed a six month program to equip them with information and tools vital for ensuring a healthy life.The program, dubbed 12+ Program, is an initiative of Population Services International (PSI), and was held in the four districts of Kicukiro, Ngoma, Musanze and Huye.The program includes personal finance, self-esteem, leadership and social capital, according to Philbert Rugumire, the Marketing & Training Director.“This project has left a very positive impact on the girls. They have learnt a lot about their health, gotten life skills and a lot more. We hope that this project continues so as to reach out to more young girls,” Rugumire said.Divine Uwase 11, a primary five student from Masaka was one of the participants.“I learnt how to save, and when my money adds up, I will open a savings account in the bank. I have also learnt how to say no to sugar daddies who lie to young girls by giving them sweets and other gifts to use them,” she said.Uwase said she also learnt to be confident and not to be shy or fear people, but to respect everyone. Another of the young girls, Aisha Uwaremwe 11, said she learnt about her body and how it functions.She said she is ready for the changes that may occur in her body in the near future and will not be afraid to share with her parents.Uwamuremwe said she hopes other young girls her age go through the very educative program.PSI partnered with Girl Hub Rwanda, Association des Guides du Rwanda (AGR) on the project while Nike Foundation funded it.
