Rwanda risks ITF ban

RWANDA Tennis Federation (RTF) risk being banned by ITF, the world tennis governing body, at the forthcoming annual general assembly in Copenhagen.Reports indicate that RTF has accumulated debts in the region of Rwf15.9m since 2010. According to the ITF Regional Development Officer Thierry Ntwali, Rwanda has until June to clear the arrears or risk ITF sanctions.“RTF have to act quickly (before July) or risk being banned from international tennis competitions,” Ntwali warned.The amount in question includes 2011 ITF Men Future fees and fines ($2058), medical insurance for Cekina Niyonshuti ($2,200) during the CAT East Africa Junior Championship, 2011 Confederation of African Tennis (CAT) subscription fees ($750), ITF subscription fees since 2010 ($10, 280), air tickets for Giselle Umumararungu and Olivier Havugimana for the 2010 Africa Junior Championship in Abuja ($1, 342) and ITF training centre fees (2011-2012) amounting to $8000.According to the ITF Vice President Vicki Fecci, Rwanda risk suspension from the international body in accordance with the ITF constitution, Article 4(d) which states that, “Any class B member or Class C member who fails for two successive years to pay its subscriptions may either (i) be suspended (by a resolution of the council passed with at least a two-thirds majority) or (ii)be expelled (by resolution of the council passed with at least a two-thirds majority) from the company and its shares forfeited to the company.”Recently, the executive committee of the federation led by Francois Ruterana resigned.
