Editor,ALLOW me through your newspaper to comment on the second monthly Government Accountability Day held under the theme - “Quality Services: A Pillar of Development”, that was held early this week.I was pleased to see the Prime Minister, senior government officials, including Ministers, Heads of public Institutions, and Mayors respond to various questions raised by journalists, participants and the general public who participate using the social media platform, phones or text messages. This is definitely the way forward for a country that believes in transparency. Accountability and the rule of law have significantly contributed to the country’s development. The country’s zero tolerance to corruption has also won us global accolades. While the idea of accountability is worthwhile, there should be an independent team equivalent to the parliamentary watchdog Public Accounts Committee to evaluate whether leaders assertions on accomplishments are reflected on ground. There have been cases, where district leaders have presented breathtaking achievements yet the reality on ground paints a totally different picture.Ben MunyakaziRulindo
