Dear editor, As I write this letter for public consumption, I am indeed disturbed by the failure of AU to act in cases of violence and conflicts in the continent. Just like the OAU, the body does not seem to be useful in terms of social, economic and political development. The member states too do not seem to respect it and actually treats it, as it used to treat the OAU. The fact that Kenya, Zimbabwe, Chad, etc., have been embroiled in violence and conflicts without the intervention of AU makes us doubt its importance. A mere change of a name from OAU to AU is not enough. It is further disturbing to find Africans calling the UN to come when situations worsen. This is tantamount to crying for help from the west that does not care for what is happening in Africa at all. I therefore call upon all African leaders to start thinking what best befits our continent before we think about development. There can never be development when there is violence all around us. This is matter of fact and the AU should act or be dissolved and leave us to entirely depend on the UN. Kicukiro
