Police have arrested three people- two women and a man- on suspicion of taking part in the murder of a Genocide survivor. Jacques Nkikabahizi died on March 30 at Kibagabaga Hospital in Kigali a day after he was beaten up by people in his home area of Nyarutarama, a city suburb. Police Spokesman, Inspector Willy Marcel Higiro, confirmed the arrest of Jean Marie Uwizeye, his wife Mariya Nyiraminani, and their neighbour, Grace Musabyimana. The three have since been quizzed by prosecutors from Gasabo District and are being held at Remera Police Station. Higiro said that Jean Paul Rukundo, a friend to the deceased, told police that Nkikabahizi’s death was accidental and was not targeted because he was a Genocide survivor. However the Executive Secretary Ibuka, the Genocide survivors’ organization, Benoit Kaboyi, said that the organization was still carrying out investigations into the murder. In an earlier press statement, Ibuka said Nkikabahizi was ambushed in Nyarutarama on March 29 and beaten by a group of over 20 people. He was with Rukundo who escaped the attackers and ran for help, Ibuka said. Ends
