Security meeting lays out 4-month plan

A national security meeting gathered, Thursday, outlined key priorities for the next four months, and among these, is intensified crackdown on illicit drug users and human trafficking. The meeting was attended by eight cabinet ministers, top military officers, Police commanders and officers from the National Correctional Services. Others who took part in the high profile security meeting include Provincial Governors, the Mayor of Kigali City and District Mayors, division commanders, Brigade Commanders and other senior local government and security officials. Prime Minister Pierre Damien Habumuremyi pointed out that security is a key driver to national development and called for more collaborative efforts among security agencies in tracking criminals. Part of the minutes of the security meeting indicates that Drug abuse and trafficking remain a major challenge. “You, as security officials are primarily responsible for the success of this country. If we put our efforts together, we can never fail,” Habumuremyi told the officials. He expressed his confidence in the security agencies saying that he was sure they have the capacity to confront and solve any problem. “It’s time for all of us to get out of our offices, we need to be with the people, work out strategies for them, with them. We can only do this if we work as a team,” the Premier added. The Minister of Local Government, James Musoni, said that the current security situation in the country is very impressive. “We highly thank the people for their unwavering role in maintaining their security. They have taken the lead role in the progress we have registered,” said the Minister. Musoni pointed out the security meeting agreed to dedicate the months of December and January to good governance where leaders will go out meet the people. edwin.musoni@newtimes.co.rw
