MTN joins KCC to plant 7,000 trees

A group of 200 staff and management of MTN Rwanda, Saturday joined Kigali City officials and residents of Mageragera Sector in Nyarugenge District in the monthly community work (Umuganda) to plant 7,000 tree seedlings on one of the sector’s hills. The initiative was in honour of Year 2011 declared by UN as a tree planting year and also compliments the government’s already extensive tree planting programs that have been adopted by both private and public institutions. “Over the years, MTN has been involved in an initiative called “Project Adopt” where we have planted 100,000 trees around schools across the country. We have nursery gardens in Nyandungu and Rulindo where we maintain a stretch of over one million tree seedlings to support the program,” Butera Rutagaramba, the Chief Financial Officer of MTN, standing in for the CEO, told the media during the ceremony. “We will endeavour to follow up our activities by regularly visiting whichever area we planted trees to ensure that they grow safely to protect the environment.” After the ceremony, MTN officials commissioned 80 dustbins to be positioned across Kigali City as part of the “Keep Kigali City Clean” that the city champions. “The bins are a statement of our support of the campaign and our commitment to being responsible corporate citizens of this beautiful city,” Rutagaramba said.
