PM advises on management of public funds

Prime Minister Pierre Damien Habumuremyi has warned officials in public institutions against mismanagement of public funds. He made the call Friday evening while officially closing a two-day retreat on Integrated Development Programmes (IDP) organized by the Ministry of Local Government. “I would like all the leaders to ensure proper management of government funds in the institutions they lead,” he said. Habumuremyi’s remarks follow the ongoing public officials’ appearance before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) to explain the loss of public funds highlighted in the 2009/10 Auditor General’s report. “I want all of us to address this challenge; there is no need of being called to face the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) to account for the loss of government funds,” he asserted. The forum brought together members of the Private Sector Federation and officials from various ministries and institutions under the economic cluster. Also in attendance were all provincial governors, the Mayor of Kigali City as well as district mayors. The retreat came up with various resolutions focusing on the promotion of industrialisation, SME’s and ICT development, as well as applications in local governments and extension services such as strengthening veterinary services at the grassroots. Other issues to be given more attention include, access to finance, infrastructure development and urbanisation, land registration, mining and afforestation. James Musoni, the Minister of Local Government, said that during the forum, the discussions were swift and smooth because they had first hand information from the field. “We are committed to ensuring that the resolutions are implemented within the timeframe.
