A few months ago I saw an article about art exhibition at the Petit Stade, so one evening I decided to take a walk to the stadium and have a look at what our local artists had to offer. Lo and behold! I was so surprised because what I saw surpassed my expectations. I saw very beautiful arts made locally by our own people. Starting with the famous Agaseke baskets; for sometime we were used to seeing them in only two colours of beige and black. Thanks to modern times, agaseke baskets are now available in different colours ranging from beige/red to beige/green. These baskets when placed strategically in the décor of any place usually have sensational results. My local church; Regina Pacis has the most beautiful Tabernacle made in form of the agaseke basket. I encourage people to use these baskets in their décor, not just as support to our artists but even in preserving our culture.Migongo are one of my favourite pieces of art in our culture. These intricately made pieces are so unique that when foreigners come around, they buy them in plenty. One time, on Dstv’s Style Channel, I saw a Mexican house which had a whole beam decorated with migongo. The owner of the house was categorical when he explained that these pieces are only found in Rwanda. I was very happy and kept on smiling like a Cheshire cat the entire time the program was being aired.Last but not least is the local tapestry art. Walking through the Union Trade Centre building in town on Tuesday, looking at everything and searching for nothing, I came across a small art shop with three young men inside it. What attracted me to this shop were the unique tapestry arts. The artist has used simple materials like sand, dye and paint to come up with the unique picture of arts that have stories to tell about our culture. What’s more, the prices are friendly for such unique pieces of art.If you would like to add something unique in decorative style, consider choosing these tapestries that will bring a breath of fresh air into your living space or any other space for that matter. These pictures can be hanged anywhere from a living room, an office or even a fairly large room.
