EASTERN PROVINCE NYAGATARE — For the first time in the history of Umutara Polytechnic, students this week elected their leaders after a stiff campaign. John Manzi, a third year student of BCOM was elected the guild president after beating his main rival, James Bwimba of the ICT Faculty. Manzi garnered 263 votes to his rival’s 153 votes. According to Eugene Kayumba who headed electoral commission, Florence Ingabire was elected unopposed for the post of vice president of the guild, while Elie Buhire got the post of General Secretary. On Wednesday partial results indicated a neck-to-neck race and many students who talked to The New Times could hardly predict who would emerge the winner. During the campaigns however, Manzi was seen as more of a gentleman and his previous experience, having formerly worked at Nyagatare sector put him at an advantage. He attracted most support from his faculty and from the Faculty of Veterinary.
