NGO roots for education of the disabled

Handicap International-Rwanda chapter on Friday met journalists from various media houses to develop means of updating government on the challenges faced by children living with disabilities The NGO aims at advocating and supporting disabled children go to school. The project manager, Silas Ngayaboshya, said that according to a survey, although there are other factors limiting the children from learning, access to facilities is a major concern. Other factors pointed out include society`s wrong perception of children with disabilities, lack of finances and as a result most of them can not afford scholastic and other materials to facilitate them in the learning process. In his presentation, Dr Evariste Karangwa, a lecturer at Kigali Institute of Education (KIE) attached to the Special Needs Education department, said many disabled children are not going to school. “In just a sample study, we indentified that in only one Sector-Ndego in Kayonza district, with 11,000 residents, 304 disabled children do not go to school and no one cares, not even the parents,” Karangwa said. During the meeting, journalists promised to step-up their efforts in reporting about the problems faced by disabled people in communities. Ends
