Politeness deters conflict

I remember talking about my qualities once to a very dear teacher of mine. When I introspected myself and with a doubt said that I think that I am polite, she happily responded, “Yes I already know that.” This made me feel happy about myself and I grasped the true value of politeness and its effect on others. I even used to read this caption in many places, posted on the wall, which said, ‘Politeness costs you nothing and you can obtain many things in this world with it.” Today as I grow up, I am realizing the true meaning of this statement. Politeness is the act of being respectful towards others. It also encompasses being considerate towards others and sensitive towards the needs of others. In a given society, we are taught to be respectful to our parents, teachers and other elders. It is also considered good to be polite with our classmates, friends, and even those younger than we are. The mode of address used may be different, but a soft, respectful and considerate tone always conveys true respect. In contrast, if one does use a polite form of address but says it harshly, it is considered disrespectful and insulting. When one is impolite towards somebody, that person may respond in the same way, thus starting a conflict. Another person may keep quiet at that moment but remember the slight mistake. On the first opportunity, they will try to get even by insulting an impolite person. If holding a superior position, they can harm the other individual in multiple ways. On the other hand, polite people always gain the goodwill and respect of all those around him or her. They gain love, respect and affection of their colleagues and friends and people younger than they are. This goodwill created along with good public relations always helps in life, wherever a person goes. Moreover, it shows others that polite people are cultured and courteous. Politeness is a positive quality and when cultivated improves ones personality. Therefore, it is important that we adopt politeness to the extent that it becomes part of our core nature. It does not need much effort. People naturally expect the best behavior from anyone. If all people remain polite all the time, our society will definitely become a better place.
