Editor, I have been following activities of Umurenge Savings and Credit Cooperatives (SACCOs) in the country and I believe that it is the best to way to eliminate poverty among rural residents. I have visited several districts recently and discovered that the Umurenge SACCOs has among other things boosted rural savings and helped many rural folks to acquire loans. I have also heard that the amount deposited with SACCOs is now above Rwf 1.5 billion, something that proves a successful implementation of the Umurenge Sacco programme. I wish the government would launch more initiatives that aim at increasing access to financial services, so that all Rwandans lead better lives. However, there is a tendency to leave all the sensitisation campaigns of the local population to Umurenge SACCO employees alone. This must change if we want the programme to succeed.
