Schools given one month to form environmental clubs

NORTHERN PROVINCE MUSANZE — An official of the Rwanda Environment Management Authority [REMA] has asked schools in the Northern Province to form environmental protection clubs to conserve the environment. The official gave the directive recently while meeting representatives of several schools in the province. The schools were given one month to form the clubs which would be registered by districts and REMA. The clubs would be under the direct supervision of teachers. According to Sebastien Dusabeyezu, the director of environmental institutional support and outreach at REMA, the directive will be extended to all schools across the country. Dusabeyezu added that REMA would give technical support in terms of reading materials about the environment. He said that the approach to involve teachers in the campaign will prepare the youth to go and serve as environmental ambassadors in their respective families. Before issuing the directive, teachers held a one-day seminar in which they discussed the measures and the challenges facing the environment and the role of teachers in the environmental campaign. Rachel Tushabe, an educator of REMA asked the teachers to utilise the opportunity given by ORTPN of allowing students to visit the national parks free of charge. Ends
