Fast-rising DJ Danny Mugisha, commonly known on the decks as Selecta Danny, has won the inaugural battle of the DJs contest concluded Saturday, August 27, at Camp Kigali. The 24-year-old showed impressive talent on the spin during the grand finale, and it earned him a vote of confidence from Nigerian DJ Neptune, South African DJ Khatu and Rwanda’s DJ Shariff and Khadir who were the judges of the grand finale panel. Over 20 DJs started the DJs battle contest’s campaign but only seven managed to reach the finale. The prizes that were put up for grabs motivated each and every one to do the best they could to take at least a prize at home. DJs Ira and Roxy who were in the female category, DJ Kiss, Selekta Gomez, Selekta Danny, Beast and Trapboy as well as most-voted DJ Mico were the seven DJs who progressed to the grand finale. Each DJ had to pass before the four-man jury and practice a 10-minute session on the decks with a music selection of their choice. And it was Danny who impressed the judges most to win the contest on a remarkable note. The DJ was, as a result, awarded a brand new car worth Rwf25 million courtesy of Ndoli Safaris as the top prize for the contest. “Honestly, I never imagined I could win a prize like this in my career and that’s why I am so excited for the milestone. It’s just the beginning,” Selekta Danny reacted to the prize after winning the DJs battle contest. “It means a lot to my career,” he added. DJ Ira emerged winner in the female category and walked away with a DJ set (turntable) worth Rwf5 million while DJ Kiss was awarded Rwf2 million as the best upcoming DJ. Mugisha started disk jockeying in 2019, but studies kept him busy and had to temporarily quit it. He returned to the decks in 2020, during the wake of Covid-19 pandemic after all activities were halted to prevent the spread of the pandemic. “All I had to do was to take my DJ set back in action to entertain my audience while at home. I took ample time to practice because the studies were suspended. It’s now becoming my daily bread,” he told The New Times. Themed ‘Taking Music to another Level’, the contest is organised by M&K, an entertainment company that exclusively organises DJ Toxxyk’s music treat ‘Sunday Churche’ which takes place every Sunday at Pegase Resort, Rebero. The idea to organise the DJs contest, organisers explained, was inspired by their passion and will to promote DJs and create public awareness of the talent and quality music in Rwanda, as well as provide business opportunities, networking, and leisure activities through competitions.
