SOUTHERN PROVINCE KAMONYI — At least 2,830 residents who successfully completed adult literacy training in Kamonyi district will this month receive their certificates, an official said last week. The beneficiaries, mostly women, will be awarded certificates of merit by the Consultative Council of Women (COCOF) and Caritas-Kabgayi, says Marthe Uwizera, a COCOF official. Uwizera made the revelation during the awarding of certificates to the adult learners who emerged best among the group in each sector. During the ceremony, competitions on human rights were staged in which participants advocated for equal rights and privileges among Rwandans. The best performing groups and individuals were awarded cash prizes, scholastic materials, hoes, basins, and shoes worth about Frw1.5 million. According to the District education officer, Evode Kagiraneza, , the programme will reduce the number of illiterate adults in the area. Literacy levels in the area are estimated at 71% out of 287,000 residents. However, there are about 83,236 illiterate individuals- who don’t want to enrol for the adult literacy programme despite concerted efforts to persuade them, Kagiraneza said. Local leaders noted that some residents who had been enrolled failed to complete the course due to different reasons.Ends
