Resist sibling rivalry

Competition between siblings may seem harmless during childhood, but it brings out the worst later since it develops into jealousy during adulthood. It’s healthy to compete but the intention of the competition is what matters most. In most cases siblings of the same sex or those with a small age gap usually compete for parental attention and affection. Sibling rivalry can involve aggression; however, it is not the same as sibling abuse where one child victimizes another. No matter how much you love your sister or brother, when sibling rivalry takes hold of you, it has a harsh effect on the ability to express affection. One’s ability to succeed should not be based on what their siblings have acquired but instead emulate the example. It’s always important to support one another in good times or bad times especially if you are siblings. Don’t let failure be the basis of trying to win; together siblings can conquer challenges. Sometimes sibling rivalry is catalyzed by parents although they do it unconsciously. Parents are supposed to treat each child equally.
