A 48-year-old head teacher in the Gicumbi District is in custody suspected of raping his 18-year-old student who recently completed senior three national examinations this year. According to Rwanda Investigation Bureau, the incident took place early this month in Mutete Sector and the suspect was arrested on August 25. “The suspect raped the victim after promising her help to score good grades in the national examination,” Thierry Murangira, the spokesperson of RIB said. Murangira disclosed that the incident occurred after the victim completed her exams. He further pointed out that these are some tricks used by rapists, usually, they promise impossible things. Murangira reminded Rwandans that they will not tolerate anyone who commits such a crime of rape due to the position they hold as well as urges everyone to report on time. “It is not appropriate for people to use their positions to commit such crimes,” he added. Meanwhile, the suspect is currently detained at Byumba RIB station. Upon conviction, a person faces imprisonment not less than 10 years but not more than 15 years and a fine of Rwf1,000,000 but not more than Rwf2,000,000.
